Yankee Stadium is the home ground of the New York Yankees that is major league baseball team. The stadium is situated at East 161st Street and River Avenue in the Bronx , New York City . The stadium was first inaugurated on April 18, 1923 and was again reopened on April 15, 1976 after an extensive three-year renovation. The first night game at the Yankee stadium was played on May 28, 1946 . Yankee Stadium is also called the "house that Ruth built," the "Home of Champions" or simply the Stadium. The Stadium is a boon for left-handed hitters for the reason it has a shorter right-field fence. The field has grown more symmetric over the years. The seats behind center field are painted black and are not occupied during baseball games. This facilitates the batters to track the ball as it is pitched. Yankee Stadium has been host to Don Larsen's perfect World Series game in 1956, Roger Maris' then record 61st home run in 1961, and Reggie Jackson's three home runs in a World Series game in 1977. New York Giants NFL team also played at the Yankee Stadium from 1956 to 1973. Some boxing matches have been held at the stadium with the Joe Louis's victory over Max Schmeling in 1938 being the most memorable one. The Army-Navy Games were played at Yankee Stadium in 1930 and 1931. The New York Cosmos league of the North American Soccer League played their home games at Yankee Stadium in 1971 and 1976. The most unique feature of the stadium is the facade that hangs over the outfield bleacher billboards and scoreboard. Yankee Stadium letters inscribed over the main gate are life long features as they the same letters that first appeared there in white in the early 1960s.
